Help! I Want to Be a Computer Graphic Artist!

Help! I can't save to anything but .PSD in Photoshop! I don't know a lot about the web, but I do know that I need to save as a GIF or JPG!
RX You have more than one Layer in Photoshop. To view the individual layers, select Window - Show Layers from the Photoshop menu bar. Then, you can see the extra layers and either decide to delete them (by selecting the layer and using the Delete key) or by Flattening the image. To flatten an image, select Layer - Flatten Image from the Layers menu or flyout menu on the Layers palette.
I want to make text fit into the shape of a fish. It's a beautiful ode I wrote to Binky, my three eyed fish. Please answer quickly because I want to add it to Binky's page ASAP!

RX Poor Binky! Fitting text into or around or into a shape, especially a curved shape, is much better accomplished in a drawing program like CorelDraw, Adobe Illustrator or Freehand. Paint programs just aren't built to do these types of tasks well.

There is a plugin for Photoshop that will allow you to add text on a path called Hot Text from Vertigo.

I wanted to create a non-animated GIF banner 400x60 pixleswith Photoshop. However, the smallest file size I can get is 24K which is too big by somebody's standard -- they need something less than 7k or 8k.
RX Turn "view thumbnails" off in Photoshop under Files- Preferences. It's the only explanation for not being able to get a single gif under 24K in file size.
I really need some masking tips. I'm trying to select part of one image and transfer it to another photo with a different background. The magic wand and lasso are not helping very much and I know the way to go is to mask BUT when I mask, I can't seem to get the image out of the picture and into the other picture.

RX Once you make the basic selection using the Marquee tools, it's probably easiest to refine the selection by using the Quick Mask function. At the bottom of the tool palette in Photoshop, there are two icons that look like a circle within a rectangle. Using QuickMask in Photoshop These icons allow you to toggle back and forth between the Marquee and the Quick Mask function. Select the Quick Mask icon, and you can use any of the brush tools or the eraser to add to your selection area. It will appear as a reddish overlay on your image so that you can keep track of what you're doing. There are a number of new filters that help you to mask, but if you learn how to use the Quick Mask tool efficiently, you won't need any expensive masking tools.
How do you make transparent GIFs in Photoshop 4.0 with the GIF89a saving filter? I can make them by "exporting" but then when I open them again the background goes gray and the transparent image is toast. Can you help me out?
RX Transparent GIFS are transparent on a web page, but won't appear transparent in a paint program.
My boss gave me a transparent gif that needed some changes. I did the changes, and the image looked fine in Photoshop. But when I opened it in the web browser, most of the image was missing! Help!
RX Check to see if there's a second channel for this GIF file. If there is, delete it, it contains the old transparency information. To check for the second channel, select Window - Show Channels. To delete an extra channel, select it and drag it to the trashcan icon at the bottom of the Channel palette, or use the Delete key.
I've seen many sites utilize a method of 'cutting' up a single image for various reasons. (load time, animation on a certain spot, etc) Though this can be done in Photoshop using the marquee tool, it is tedious, are there any programs that make this job a little easier?
RX Here are a couple of tips to make slicing the image a tad less tedious in Photoshop. You can set the marquee tool to a fixed size, which helps if you're trying to slice your table into quarters, for instance. Double click on the Marquee tool, and on the tool palette change the type of Marquee from Normal to Fixed. Then type the pixel values that you want to use in the width and height boxes. Select the area you want to use from your original image, then select Control+C (Command+C on the Mac), Control+N (Command+N on the Mac), which will automatically create a new file the same size as your marqueed selection. Finally, select Control+V to paste the marqueed area into the new file.

There is also an application called Picture Dicer available for Windows users.

I'm trying to make a good, quick-to-upload picture gallery that doesn't take much fuss. I've heard of a few methods, but they're all time consuming, or slow-downloading. Is there another way out?
RX You can use any paint program to make a "thumbnail" or smaller image that you can link to a larger version of the same image. A page of tiny thumbnails will give the viewer enough of an idea which images they'd like to see in a larger size without having to wait for images to download that they're not interested in.

To make a thumbnail of an image, in your paint program open the original image, then:

In Photoshop, select Image-Duplicate. If it's a GIF, Select Image-Mode-RGB.

Select Image/Size, make sure the "Constrain Proportions" checkbox is checked, and change the size of your image. Try making the image size 40 or 50 pixels in its largest dimension (width or height). Save the image, and you have created your first thumbnail. This is the perfect kind of task to use Photoshop Actions for. By creating a custom Action, you can convert whole folders of images at once.
