By following this tutorial, you'll learn how to create a sophisticated, subtle text effect that you can use on your web site. This tutorial explains how to achieve this type effect using Photoshop or PaintShop Pro. PaintShop Pro is a shareware paint program for Windows available at http://www.jasc.com.

To Create Feathered Text in Photoshop

1. Start with a new file in RGB color.
In Photoshop 3: Create your text using a dark color, then deselect the text (Control+D on Windows, Command+D on the Mac).
In Photoshop 4: Turn off the Preserve Transparency Checkbox on the Layer by using the keyboard shortcut / .

2. Select Filter/Blur/Gaussian Blur. Experiment with the amount of blurring until the effect looks right.

3. Select white as the foreground color, and recreate the type. Drag the type in place on top of the blurred copy of the type. To save the file as a GIF file, in Photoshop 3 select Mode/Indexed, in Photoshop 4 select Image/Mode/Indexedand save the file as a gif file.

Some additional tips: You can adjust the contrast of the image by selecting Image/Adjust Levels. You can use additional filters once you've created the type for more exotic effects. Try Filter/RenderLighting, or Filter/Stylize/Wind for different effects.

To Create Feathered Text in Paint Shop Pro

1. Start with a new file in RGB color. Create your text using a dark color.

2. Select Image/Normal Filter/Blur More. You may want to apply the filter more than once. Experiment with the amount of blurring until the effect looks right.

3. Select white as the foreground color, and recreate the type. Drag the type in place on top of the blurred copy of the type. To save the file as a GIF file, select Colors/Decrease Color Depth/256 colors, and save the file as a gif file.
