Logo Fonts and Lettering Bible by Leslie Cabarga. I've been an admirer of Leslie Cabarga's work (fonts such as Rocket ans Streamline). He's written a beautiful book that is dense with information, inspiration, and tutorials. If you're confused about how to work with type to create custom lettering or fonts, or if you want to know how to combine fonts, this is a beautifully illustrated book. You'll learn how to work with Illustrator - at last, victory over vectors!

Learn Fontlab Fast! by Leslie Cabarga. Fontlab unquestionably the best program for creating custom type. This book by Leslie Cabarga guides you though the muddy waters of kerning and hinting. He also helps you to create typefaces more quickly by breaking down their components and recombining them. The book also includes tips and quotes from current type designers.

Fontographer: Type by Design by Stephen Moyes. This is the only book available for Fontographer, outside of the user's manual. It's out of print, but Amazon often has used copies for sale.

The book focuses more on design issues, which is good, because the Fontographer users manual does an adequate job of covering the technical issues for using the program. For instance, this book gives very clear descriptions of the different types of control points, and why you would use them. There are discussions on kerning, placement, and many more design issues. If you want to know more about using Fontographer, this is the book you're looking for.
